One of the biggest obstacles to being a writer is writer’s block. It can strike at any time and completely tank your productivity. Writers block can occur for many reasons, but it can take some time and work to break out of it. Some things work and some things don’t. It all depends on the writer. 1. Write a quick outline. A blank page is often daunting and can cause you to sit and stare at the screen for unproductive hours. Working on an outline for a few minutes gets your brain thinking in the right direction and will help you get past that first blank page.

2. Read read read. And don’t just read within one genre. Explore something new as often as possible. Head into a bookstore and browse until something catches your eye. Check out some online reviews and pick up a new hot book. Look for something no one has ever heard of, read it, and write your own review. Reading will get your brain working and help generate ideas to get you past the writer’s block.

3. Write what you feel like writing. Although it’s true that if you want to be a successful writer you need to write for your audience, when you are trying to overcome writer’s block it is a good idea to just put pen to paper and write. Just word vomit everywhere. The important thing is to get writing again.

4. Avoid editing while you are writing. It may be tempting to immediately fix that annoying typo, but if you are struggling with writer’s block then you want to just keep writing. Finish what you are working on and then go back and fix errors.

5. Change your location. Try writing outside or in a different room of your home. Sometimes this is all that is needed to clear your mind enough to start writing again. If you still cannot start writing, then minimize distractions by turning off the Internet and finding somewhere quiet to work.

6. Take a short break. Go for a walk or a bike ride around your neighborhood. Read a chapter in a book. Get your mind off of your project for a little bit and focus on something else. You will be more refreshed and ready to work when you come back to your writing.

Writer’s block is a problem that every writer struggles with at some point. With these six ways to destroy writer’s block, you will be able to get back to writing in no time. Writer’s block can be frustrating, but the key is to not let it get in your head. Find someway to clear your mind and the block will disappear.
